An official proclamation from the Governor Perdue has been signed proclaiming May 13 – 19, 2012 as “State Library of North Carolina Week.”

NCpedia to include entries from two print reference resources

Through a partnership with UNC Press, the State Library of North Carolina will be expanding NCpedia to incorporate entries from UNC Press’s Encyclopedia of North Carolina and Dictionary of North Carolina Biography. The NCpedia expansion will take place over the next three years and is made possible in part by a Library Services and Technology Act grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Prepaid LYRASIS Online Courses Now Available

The State Library of North Carolina purchased a block of course units for eligible North Carolina library staff (those employed by NC LIVE libraries). These online courses are taught by professional instructors and will remain available until the units are exhausted, or December 19, 2012, whichever comes first. Cal Shepard named new State Librarian, effective Feb. 1, 2012

Cal Shepard, new State Librarian

Secretary Linda A. Carlisle of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources is pleased to announce the appointment of Caroline (Cal) Shepard as the new State Librarian of North Carolina, effective February 1, 2012. Ms. Shepard will replace current State Librarian, Mary Boone, who is retiring on January 1, 2012.

Ms. Shepard spent many years in North Carolina before her relocation to Atlanta. She received her BA from the University of Colorado and her MSLS from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She began her career in public library children’s services, first in the Nantahala Regional Library System in western North Carolina, and then at the Forsyth County Public Library in Winston-Salem. Ms. Shepard worked at the State Library of North Carolina from 1993-1999, first as Youth Services Consultant and then as the Chief of Library Development, supervising statewide library services and overseeing state and federal grant programs for North Carolina’s libraries.

Beginning in 1999, Ms. Shepard worked with SOLINET, the regional library consortium, in Atlanta as Educational Services Manager, where she developed and implemented strategic and operational plans including marketing, service and project development, financial management, performance appraisal and salary administration. She created and managed training programs and presentations that were delivered to national and international audiences and established SOLINET’s first distance education program.

Following the creation of the expanded consortium, LYRASIS, in 2006, Ms. Shepard became Director of Consulting Services, managing projects in the areas of strategic planning, staff development planning and 5-year LSTA plan evaluation. She has provided facilitation for statewide initiatives for state libraries around the country and has been responsible for planning and presenting programs on library leadership and emerging issues such as technology and privacy.
