History of Halloween – From the GHL Collections

THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays by kids and adults alike, but how much do you really know about the history of the holiday? Well, if you are interested in learning more about Halloween, the Government and Heritage Library has a book in its collection entitled: Halloween Through Twenty Centuries by Ralph and Adelin Linton.

This book provides a brief history of Halloween from its beginnings as a religious festival on the eve of All Hallows day (or All Saints day) and how it was celebrated throughout some countries in Europe. The book also contains some history on witches in Europe, the practice of witchcraft in New England and the introduction of “trick or treat” in America. If you are interested in learning more about this popular holiday, check it out!
