New Information from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners

Written by Elizabeth Hayden, Demographics and Reference Librarian

According to the Survey of Business Owners: Black-Owned Businesses: 2007, North Carolina had 83,900 black-owned businesses–60.9% more than in 2002.  The Survey of Business Owners consists of data from a questionnaire sent to approximately 2.3 million businesses.

The Black-Owned Business release follows those for Hispanic and Women Business owners and the Preliminary Estimates of Business Ownership by Gender, Ethnicity, Race, and Veteran Status released July, 2010.  It is part of a survey conducted every five years since 1972 for years that end with a “two” and “seven”.  Stay tuned for more releases this spring and summer for Asian-Owned and Veteran-Owned Businesses and Characteristics of Businesses.
