New Additions: Genealogy – What’s in a Name?

New additions to the collections of the Government and Heritage Library:

The Scottish Surnames of Colonial America, by David Dobson. Providing insight into the life of early ancestors and progenitors of a family, this book presents the different categories of Scottish surnames, summarizes the meanings behind each one, and mentions specific early settlers with the surname.

German-American Names, 3rd Edition, by George Jones. The book offers brief surname definitions along with extensive background information explaining the origins of German surnames. Filling a gap in current literature, it also addresses the Americanization of German immigrants’ names .
