North Carolina Digital Collection Updates!

We have 2 updates to share about the North Carolina Digital Collections: the Family Records Collection has a new homepage and a new look and we have added some more State Fair Premium Lists to the State Fair Digital Collection!

Family Records Collection – New Look

The State Library of North Carolina recently redesigned their website. Along with this change, we collaborated with reference staff at the Government & Heritage Library as well as staff at the State Archives of North Carolina to incorporate the Family Records Collection’s previous design into the North Carolina Digital Collections.

What changed?

The old design of the Family Records Collection website was separated into multiple webpages and sections. We have combined these pages into one main location for easy access: Family Records Collection landing page, which mimics the look and feel of our many other available digital collections.

Information about additional genealogical research has been moved to the Government & Heritage Library’s webpage Genealogy : Get Started, while information about how to contact us at either the State Archives or the State Library has been incorporated in the Contact section of the Digital Collections.

Information about the Family Records Vertical File Transcription Project is now available in the Help section of the Digital Collections.

What is the same?

Browse by Family Name

Access to items within the Family Records Collection is the same as it’s always been – titles and content are still available in the NC Digital Collections and you can still search for them using keyword searches as well as advanced searching.

Features like browsing by family surname, location, time period, and common formats and subjects are all still available, but now all in one place!

Browse by Location: Map, County, State, or Country

Additionally, you can still quickly jump to specific search results by selecting one of six curated shortcuts: Bible Records, Marriage and Death Notices, Family History Books, Cemetery Records, and Transcribed Genealogy Vertical Files.

Questions? Feedback?

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or feedback about this new look!

State Fair Premium Lists – Filling in gaps

In collaboration with UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, we were able to recently add a handful of missing years to the digitized State Fair Premium Lists. Currently, we have years 1853 through 2014 available in the North Carolina Digital Collections, with the only years outstanding being 1883, 1886, 1888, and 1890. The newly added years are for years 1894, 1895, and 1935:
