We are still celebrating the North Carolina State Fair for this week’s Picture of the Week.  Have you had a chance to check out this year’s fair? If you are familiar with the fair then you know that besides, giant vegetables, prize winning livestock, carnival rides and deep fried foods there is quality entertainment for the entire family.  These days you can check out pig races, demolition derbys and even a show by American Idol Scotty McCreery.

In the earlier days of the fair there show girls, animals acts, freak shows and much, much more! Including Jack Kochman’s Hell Drivers, the subject of this week’s picture. Kochman’s Drivers performed at the fair starting in 1946 through the early 1980s with a final appearence in 1988. The appearence of “auto thrill shows” have a long traditon at the North Carolnia State Fair.

Browse through Blue Ribbon Memories: Your History of the NC State Fair for State Fair Premium books for ads for the various State Fair entertainment offered through the years. Government and Heritage Library Wants You to Follow Us on Pinterest

The Government and Heritage Library has joined the Pinterest revolution.  We’re pinning images from our website, the North Carolina Digital Collections, NCpedia pages, our blog, and the library’s Flickr account.  If you’re on Pinterest, follow us and like and repin our pins.

Many libraries have joined Pinterest and are using it to promote their resources, programs, and staff.  Launched in March 2010, Pinterest was an invitation only website until August 2012.  It is very popular and features pins related to health, home decorating, recipes, books, travel, fashion, and a wide variety of topics that appeal to a multitude of interests.

The State Fair began last week, but visit our State Fair Board on Pinterest and travel back in time to some highlights of the fair including visits from Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman. These images can also be found in Blue Ribbon Memories State Fair Collection which is part of the North Carolina Digital Collections, a joint project of the State Library and State Archives of North Carolina.

The State Library is commemorating its 200th anniversary this year and have pinned several images from our digital collection to The State Library Celebrates 200 Years Board showcasing key staff members throughout the library’s history.

Visit our Pinterest page and learn more about North Carolina, its talented authors, athletes, historic school buildings, state symbols, and more. You should also check the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources Pinterest page for more NC culture, arts and history.

State Fair 2012

Tractor and Blue RibbonToday kicks off the 2012 North Carolina State Fair, and are we ever excited. Long-time readers of the blog may remember the project we released last year – Blue Ribbon Memories – which highlights Fair documents in our collections as well as other fun memorabilia. Even better, it’s a place for YOU to share your Fair memories or what I like to call the “unofficial” history of the Fair with future generations.

So if you’re about to bring in a “Bumper Crop of Fun” at this year’s Fair, or have a great photograph or memory of a past Fair, head over to the Blue Ribbon Memories site and share it with us.

Picture of the Week: Cover of the 1937 North Carolina State Fair Premium List

North Carolina State Fair premium list, cover (1937)
This idealized view of “man” is done in the style of the 19th-century European artistic movement of the same name. (See, for example, Demosthenes at the Sea Shore by A. Bernard Sykes.) In his hands, our North Carolina man holds the State seal and a paper, perhaps representing knowledge or progress.

It’s October and you know what’s it is almost time for? The State Fair of North Carolina! This week’s pic is of the cover of the 1937 North Carolina State Fair premium list.
