A Look at the Family History Fair’s Family and Local History Organizations and Businesses   

Based in Raleigh, Interwoven Heritage Services offers a variety of services trained to meet your family history needs.  From conducting and transcribing oral history interviews to digitizing and preserving photos, Interwoven is there to meet the historical needs of families, businesses, and organizations.

 As of 7/27/12 - The Old North State Detectorists Club is no longer able to make it. 

The Old North State Detectorists Club is a group of ethical metal detecting hobbyists who help you locate lost items or artifacts on your property at no cost.  If you are interested in learning more about metal detecting or joining their club, stop by their exhibit at the fair or watch their YouTube channel for more information.

 

Have you ever wondered what to do with old family photos besides display them in picture frames throughout your home?  Lisa of Esther’s Place Heritage Gifts has the remedy for you.  She is able to take digital versions of your photos and turn them into jewelry, coasters, and ornaments.

 

 

Established to preserve the cultural and architectural history of Jamestown, the Historic Jamestown Society holds membership in the National Trust for Historic Preservation.   They also offer tours of the Mendenhall Plantation which includes the main house, school house, medical school, and barn.

Government and Heritage Library Family History Fair - August 11th!In a series of posts leading up to August 11th our intern, Carla Sarratt will be highlighting the various vendors and activities that will be part of the Government and Heritage Library’s Family History Fair (a 2nd Saturdays program).

Government and Heritage Family History Fair: Featured Presentations

As part of the day’s activities on August 11th we will be featuring two speakers who will be presenting on family history topics.

 “We Have Stories to Tell: Family and Personal Stories” by Sylvia Payne, B.A. Sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council Road Scholars Program.  11 a.m.

 North Carolina Native Sylvia Payne is a professional storyteller and serves as a board member of the North Carolina Storytelling Guild.  According to her Story Traditions website, she “presents multicultural folktales, stories of history, and North Carolina legends and stories that captivate adults, families, and students.”  She encourages her audience members to share their stories as a way of preserving the family and history for younger generations.

Ms. Payne’s appearance is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment from the Humanities.

“Exploring the North Carolina Digital Collections: Tips and Tricks for Genealogists and Historians,” by Lisa Gregory, Digital Collections Manager, Digital Information Management Program, Government and Heritage Library. 1 p.m.

Lisa Gregory, the Digital Collections Manager of the State Library’s Digital Information Management Program, will discuss the  online Family Records collection and what’s inside.  She will also identify how to go deeper for genealogy content in our collections using State Publications. Learn more about our vertical file digitization project and how you can access that content and crowdsourcing and how it’s helping researchers find their family.

The North Carolina Digital Collections is a collaborative effort, bringing together items held in the physical collections of the State Archives and State Library of North Carolina. The primary focus is on documentary and state government information from and about North Carolina.

A Look at the Family History Fair’s Genealogy Societies and Organizations  

Genealogy has become one of the world’s most popular hobbies.  With TV shows like Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., genealogical research is introduced to novices who are led to explore their own family history.  The Government and Heritage Library is proud to serve as a family history resource by providing patrons access to helpful databases like Ancestry, HeritageQuest, and Fold 3 along with microfilm copies of newspapers dating back to colonial times in North Carolina, census records, and other helpful resources.  As family history lovers progress from novice to guru, there are genealogy clubs and societies that serve as an additional resource or support system. Here are some organizations that will be part of our Family History Fair on August 11th.

The Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina in New Bern is devoted to bringing together the families of Eastern North Carolina from past to present. With two research travel trips planned for 2013, be sure to visit them at the fair to find out where and how you can participate.  Learn more about the future Heritage Park  that is to be built in New Bern to celebrate the heritage and many cultures that have called New Bern and Craven County their home since their beginnings in 1710 and 1712 respectively.

Organized in April 1982, the Wake County Genealogical Society offers membership to those who live in Wake County as well as those who are researching their familial links to the Wake County area.  They offer support and research tips as well as a community of other genealogists to further their commitment to providing cultural, educational, and social opportunities involving genealogy.

 Chartered in 1974, The North Carolina Genealogical Society is a state society for everyone who has an interest in genealogical or historical research.  Through programs and publications, the North Carolina Genealogical Society aims to serve as a facilitator for the exchange of genealogical information.

The North Carolina Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists is dedicated to promoting an understanding of what genealogy entails and educating the public about the value of family history research.  Their members include professional researchers, authors, and speakers who work to promote the business of genealogy.  On their website, the members’ biographies are included which allows prospective clients to know their professional background and interests. We will be having more on this organization in a future blog post.

2nd Saturdays! Government and Heritage Library Family History Fair - August 11th! Mark your calendars for the very first Government and Heritage Library Family History Fair part of 2nd Saturdays to be held on Saturday, August 11th in the Cultural Resources Building, 109 E. Jones Street in Raleigh from 10am – 2pm!
